Closing arguments are Wednesday before State District Judge John Dietz, who's also expected to rule Wednesday. The ruling likely will be appealed. Dietz heard about six weeks of testimony as hundreds of Texas school districts sued the state over the share-the-wealth system. Critics say the system's dependence on local property taxes is unconstitutional. Attorneys for the state have maintained that the system exceeds the minimum requirements in the Texas constitution. Lawyers for the state also say any changes to the way public education is funded should be made by the Legislature. In the final testimony, school finance expert witness Craig Wood said the Texas school finance system is "acceptable, if not exemplary," compared to other states. But attorneys for the suing school districts argued that equity doesn't necessarily translate into qualit! y education.
